Novel Study
In Key Stage Two, we teach Reading through the Novel Study approach, where we carefully select a high-quality text to study in depth. Novel Study enables the children to know more about authors and their intentions for the audience, to remember more about vocabulary (enriching their own) and to understand how to use and apply their reading skills – to impact upon their reading comprehension progress. Throughout the process of Novel Study, the children develop a clear understanding of a text, which subsequently impacts on their linked writing and, as a result of the approach, a passion for reading is fostered in the children.
A typical Novel Study lesson follows the structure of:
- Pre-reading activity
- Vocabulary discussion
- Teacher & pupil reading
- Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Evaluate, Retrieve, Summarise/Sequence (VIPERS) questions
- Model answers
- Shared/independent reading (if required)
- Review and Reflect
Teachers use rich, high quality and exciting texts and pupils explore unfamiliar vocabulary and/or a revision of previously explored vocabulary. Teachers will model how a text should be read, whilst shared, paired and/or independent reading is used to build fluency. Children are provided with opportunities to answer a range of question types linked to VIPERS. Each session, teachers will instigate high-quality discussions about the text.
