Reading

Intent

At Valley Invicta Primary School at East Borough, the intent of our Reading curriculum is to deliver a curriculum that instils a love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.  We believe that it every child’s right to learn to read and develop an enjoyment of reading for pleasure.  Staff act as reading role models and children have access to a wide range of high-quality texts both in the class libraries and the main school library.  Through reading, pupils at East Borough have opportunities to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Valley Invicta Primary School at East Borough School has identified Key Intentions that drive our Reading curriculum.  At Valley Invicta Primary School at East Borough, our Reading curriculum intentions are:

  • apply phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decode words;
  • To develop stamina to read easily, fluently and with good understanding;
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading;
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage and understand/internalise the structure of texts;
  • being encouraged to link texts to their own experiences, learning or topical issues;
  • use discussion to develop an understanding of author intent, critical thinking – reading to provoke thought in children.
